Mental Health

The Courses

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised training course which teaches people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help on a first aid basis.
MHFA England training won’t teach you to be a therapist, but just like physical first aid, it will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis. Adult MHFA England courses are for everyone aged 18 upwards.

Every MHFA England course is delivered by a quality assured Instructor Member who has attended MHFAE’s in depth Instructor Training Programme accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health, and is trained to keep people safe and supported while they learn.

Mental Health First Aid Refresher

We believe that mental health should be treated equally to physical health. And just like physical first aid, Mental Health First Aid training should be kept up to date. If you’re a Mental Health First Aider we recommend you take the MHFA Refresher course within three years of your first MHFA training to:

  • Keep your awareness of mental health support current.
  •  Update your knowledge of mental health and what influences it.
  •  Practice applying the Mental Health First Aid action plan.

This is a 4-hour session with a mix of presentations, discussions and activities.

Mental Health Skills For Managers

To create mentally healthy workplaces, it’s vital to build supportive relationships between managers and team members. Delivered by workplace mental health experts, this 4-hour training promotes a healthy performance culture, giving you the skills and confidence to have conversations about mental health and encourage people to seek support.

Managers will learn:

  • How to spot the signs of poor mental health in your team, signpost to appropriate tools and resources, and become a self-care role model.
  • Through supporting the mental health of your team you will encourage people to thrive, increase talent retention and reduce the impact of presenteeism and long-term sickness absence.

Youth Mental Health

The two day course will allow you to develop practical skills to identify a range of mental health issues and support a young person to get the help they need. Completing the two day course qualifies you as a Youth Mental Health First Aider.

Youth Mental Health First Aid provides an in depth understanding of specific mental health issues and is delivered in four manageable chunks:

  • What is mental health
  • Depression and anxiety, suicide and psychosis
  • Self-harm and eating disorders.

It focuses on the issues faced by young people today, such as cyber bullying and substance misuse, and teaches how to promote protective factors and good parenting
